I'm back!

2 min read
Hey, it's been a while! It's been a weird couple of years since I was last on this site, but I'm really excited to get back to posting my work here and hopefully getting commissions.

I am currently attending the Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford and I'm scheduled to graduate in 2016. I'm getting my BFA in illustration and (because I'm a transfer) I'm completing half of my senior year right now and half of it next year. I've got a great studio space with all my friends in my department and I fully intend to live there sometimes.

I'm living with my parents in a town right outside of New Haven right now and working part-time at a farm market. It's really nice to be able to go into New Haven frequently to see the excellent galleries and museums that Yale opens to the public. Spending a morning at an art museum is probably the best way to start your day.

I would love to get back in touch with people I used to talk to on this site, and I'd also like to join some groups. I don't have time to run any of my old groups anymore. I'm really sorry. I had a lot of fun running them, but I would rather focus my time and energy on creating beautiful illustrations and working on my education. If you have any groups you think I should join, send me a message and let me know!

I'll be posting my current work on here soon, and I'll also start showing you guys sketches and tutorials. In the past few years, my work has improved exponentially because of the amazing professors and students who have helped me become a better artist. I would never have learned how to design, draw, paint, and produce this kind of work without the amazing opportunities that I have been lucky enough to receive in my education.

Much love,

EmilyRose

The solution.

So, I've come up with a solution to the problems here. lol.

Even though I don't have very many watchers or pageviews, I have decided to begin featuring people in my journals. I also might see if I can suggest any Dailys, and I've stopped looking at the damned front page entirely.

So, I will not give up, but I will instead channel my frustration toward promoting those of you who get very little attention for what you do because it's not anime or photorealism. I think that if people on this site saw more art that was different, they would definitely like it, but right now they don't know what they're missing.

FEATURE

This week's feature is pijus! His gallery has a very wide range of work, and he is an excellent illustrator. I especially like his colour schemes, eye for composition, and ability to break down his work into simpler forms that become more complex or less complex depending on the piece. Check it out!

I mean, dA is great and all, but it's gotten to a really frustrating point where I'm realizing that all the art I admire is not as popular as all the manga/anime and photorealism, and I am of the belief that art should be original and interesting (sorry, I think I just offended half the site with that sentence.) So I might just leave so I can stop getting fed up and venting my anger here and elsewhere; it is unneeded stress that I really don't want.

I am going to follow the through with the groups I am in and my kiriban prizes and such, but I don't think I will be so active on this site any longer. I am thinking of just starting an art blog and a tumblr. I also want to be more active on sites like Society6, they have much more originality and higher-level art there; here there is too much amateur art receiving undue amounts of praise, and many talented professionals are kind of pushed aside in favor of high school kids who do manga and my little pony for points.

This site has been very good to me over the years, but I believe that I will find more challenge and inspiration elsewhere. Here, I look at a lot of the work and say, "This is stupid, everyone at my school can do that." Which sounds so pretentious, but it's true. After my first semester of drawing class, I could copy all the characters from Fruit's Basket for you. I could make flawless chibis, if I wanted to. I could trace or grid or eyeball photographs and use the colorpicker to make a digital painting that looked exactly the same as a reference. Not because I'm a good artist, but because I have been taught the skills I would need to do that. They are skills that most artists have, so I just don't see the point of pretending that nobody else can do it. It's pretentious of the people who post it and call it art to do so, because honestly, I believe that anyone off the street who has the patience to learn technique can copy things. It's tedious and boring, but it's pretty fucking easy.

My point is, a lot of the "art" on this site is not at a level of originality, composition, and style that I have been pushed to look for in my first semester of art school. All of you probably hate me for saying all this, and I don't blame you, because if I had read this post sometime last year, I would have thought the person writing this was a crazy art snob. But it's not the fact that what I consider lower art forms are popular, but the fact that artists like UknoKris10, elvesart, ThomasVanDun, agropups, nuhorizons18, and GiannaPergamo (to name a few) are not valued as much as photorealistic and manga/anime artists. It's not what's popular that bothers me, but what isn't. The more I am exposed to great art, and the more I begin to question the art world in general, the more frustrated and disgusted I become with the tastes of the people on this site. For most people here, it isn't their fault because this site does not give these artists space on the front page- It's set up to only show what's popular, and it's usually fanart, photorealistic pictures of celebrities, and fads like My Little Pony or Vocaloids. There is nothing wrong with this kind of art getting attention, but it's sickening to think that works that are more original and require thought get no attention here.

So I think I might leave, because it's gotten to a point where I'm frustrated beyond belief and need to express my opinions, which isn't going too well because I tend to be a bitch about it when I think that something isn't fair.

I leave you with this, so you don't think I'm being a complete asshole:

I don't believe that I'm a good artist. Really. And I don't think that any of my work is any better than the majority of the art on this site.

I don't believe that my work should be popular.

I do believe that there is a lot of undervalued work on this site, and for the rest of you who remain here, do your best to find it and post it everywhere you can, for the sake of these talented people who have clearly mastered the skills they need to create the visions they have based on their ideas. The people who make you think, or who make something you've never seen before. The people who draw inspiration from the world around them and use that spark to make something new and unique.

I do believe that I'm an inquisitive person who is trying to figure out who I am as an artist. I am trying to find out why I love the things I love and why I hate the things I hate. And I'm finding, more and more, that the work that gets the most attention on this site is pushing my work in the wrong direction.

Needless to say, I will mention that a few of the more popular artists on this site, like loish, Mapache-Salado, and AudreyBenjaminsen (to name a few) have inspired me to create better work and given me something to strive for. But even then, I doubt they're getting as many pageviews as people who make My Little Pony fanart are right now.

Any site that is driven by the popularity of something will have its flaws, and it is a shame to see a site with so many promising developing artists who are brushed under the rug. For example, why aren't DailyDeviations the default front page, instead of the most popular works? The site seems to be designed to make artists who are already popular even more so, and it's maddening.

Just think about it, please.

Thanks, if you read all this.

Love,

Early.
